History
Built at Crewe Works, this locomotive entered service in November 1945 as LMS No.4907, fitted with a boiler of the domed type. The Stanier ‘Black Five’ was among the most successful 4-6-0 ‘Mixed Traffic’ designs, equally at home on passenger work as freight, and used the length and breadth of the country, other than in deepest ‘Southern’ territory. Eighteen examples have been preserved, but No. 44907 wasn’t one of the lucky ones, being withdrawn at Liverpool’s ‘8A’ Edge Hill shed in November 1967 and broken up at Cashmore’s in Newport in June 1968.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.
